Hello all, I have been supplied a Quicktime file that has come from FCP that I need to edit from. It's an XDCAM EX codec and DS pops up with an error message when I try to import it, and then it imports the audio only. It won't link to it either. As I understand from a little digging, it's something to do with me not having the right codecs for Quicktime. I've looked around and I can't seem to find the codec for me to download. Has anyone had this same issue and managed to resolve it? Any help much appreciated.deadlines are looming!!
Rip, Apple has a set of proprietary professional Quicktime codecs which basically only work on the Mac platform - they are installed when FCS is installed on the system. If you open the Quicktime in player on your DS system, there is a high chance that you will just see a white frame rather than the video.
This is an indication that your system does not have the QT codec which was used to create the QT. In all likelyhood, the EX footage was imported into FCP and then a QT file was exported with no transcoding and delivered to you.
If it's raw footage, you'd be better off with the source BPAV folder. If it's edited, you simply need access to a mac with FCP installed so that you can transcode the material into something suitable for the DS - for example, Avid 1:1. Hope this helps, David.
There has been much discussion about the new ProRes codecs and that has raised a few questions concerning my workflow. How can I ingest my XDCAM files using the log and transfer? I have been using the Sony XDCAM transfer and would like to try to edit in ProRes LT. When I try the log and transfer, it does not see my disc that is mounted on the desktop.
The reason for wanting to use the log and transfer is I have been told I can use that method to transcode to ProRes on ingest. Is that correct? And, that brings up the BIG question. Will my editing day go smoother if I edit in ProRes LT as compared to staying native XDCAM HD? I could ingest using SDI in and the Kona card, but I have really become a fan of file based input. Many questions, but I hope some input from you guys will settle once and for all. Microsoft plus! superpack for windows xp.
Thanks much, Tom. If you're going to work in XDCAM HD as your source and sequence format then you can still enjoy some of the benefits of ProRes along the way. I'd recommend switching your Sequence Settings >> Render Control tab >> Render Codec to Apple ProRes 422. That'll gain you some advantage in interim render time whilst working in the timeline. Similarly when you export your final master then I'd recommend exporting as Apple ProRes 422 as well, no need to use XDCAM HD as the mastering format unless you are archiving to XDCAM HD disc.
