Hi Guys: I have a Craftsman 4 1/2” Joiner-Planer I got from a neighbor (it was free so I couldn’t turn it down ). It is missing the guard but it does work, although it is a little loud. The blades were dull so I purchased a new set. I was surprised but Sears still has the blades available.

My problem, and question is does any one know how to adjust the blades on this? I got them close but one or both of the blades is slightly eschew. I can tell when I make several passes on a board the cut becomes increasingly crooked. I can compensate by alternately flipping the board end for end but then I am going against the grain and get tear out. When I try to “level” the blades I have a hard time lining it up when the blade assembly wants to rotate and I can’t find a way to hold the assembly firmly.

Also, when I tighten the blade hold down screws, the blade shifts on me!! I cuss a lot!!l I can’t find a manual on this so does anyone know how I can adjust these.

I knowI should buy a REAL planer but like I said, it was free! Thanks for your help Bill -- If you think you can, or think you can't.your right! The blades being off by even a fraction of an inch is just as bad as it being off by a mile. I use a dial indicator with a magnetic base. Like Loren said, “pull up a low stool” because the devil is in the detail. The 4” jointer I have uses three set screws to hold each of the three blades in place. I lock the center set screw and make the fine adjustments with the outer set screws until it is as perfect as I can get it.

When you get a good measurement on one blade, repeat on the other two blades. I remember seeing an in-depth write up on this subject in Wood Magazine but I can’t seem to find it right now.

-- Brian, Lebanon PA, If you aren’t having fun doing it, find something else to do. Bill, is an article by that I found to be pretty helpful in setting jointer knives. What you have described sounds pretty normal to me. If the knives are off even a few thousands then you will have the problems that you are describing and, the knives will move when the gib screws are tightened unless you put downward pressure on the knives to hold them with a wood block or dowel while tightening the screws. -- Challenges are what make life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful- Joshua Marine.

SIMPLE made guage.Plane a piece of hardwood about 12” long to use as guage. Mark a line on the stick’s face where it crosses the edge of the outfeed table. Rotate the cutterhead slowly so the knife passes beneath the stick. If the stick doesn’t move, the knife is set too low.

If the knife just brushes the stick, it’s flush with the outfeed table—which is still a hair too low. Ideally, you want the knife to drag the stick aout 1/8”, more than a 1/16” but less than 1/4”. This indicates the knife is a few thousandths proud, and your jointer will work just right, both now and as the knives wear toward dull. Move the setting stick to the near side of the outfeed table and make sure the knife drags the stick just the same amount to guarantee it’s parallel to the outfeed table across its width. Repeat this process till all your blades are equal.
